Brampton used the area code 0697 until the early 1990s, when numbers were transferred to the 06977 area code (since changed to 016977).
There is confusion over the 016977 area code as, although it has been proven to exist, it does not appear in the official National Telephone Numbering Plan. It appears that regulator Ofcom has recorded the code inconsistently as both 01697 and 016977 at different times, but failed to respond to calls to rectify the errors.
