01144 Numbers

In the UK, an 01144 number is a normal landline phone number within the Sheffield (0114) area code.

Any British number beginning with 0114 is a Sheffield number. The '0114' area code at the beginning is optional if you're dialling from one Sheffield 0114 landline phone to another.

0114 or 01144?

There is no 01144 area code. Since the year 1995, Sheffield has had the four-digit area code 0114, followed by seven-digit local numbers.

The correct way to write a number beginning '01144' is (0114) 4xx xxxx, as this clearly distinguishes the optional 0114 area code from the seven digit local phone number. (Why this matters...)

Have things changed?

During the year 1995, Sheffield's area code changed from 0742 to 0114, while its old six-digit local phone numbers were prefixed with '2' to make them seven digits long.

For example, (0742) 726444 became (0114) 272 6444.

The new system gives Sheffield nearly 8 million numbers: (0114) 2000000 to (0114) 9989999. Prior to the change, fewer than 800,000 were available: (0742) 200000 to (0742) 998999.
