01159 Numbers

In the UK, an 01159 number is a normal landline phone number within the Nottingham (0115) area code.

Any UK number beginning with 0115 is a Nottingham number. The '0115' area code at the beginning is optional if you're dialling from one Nottingham 0115 landline phone to another.

0115 or 01159?

There is no 01159 area code. Since the year 1995, Nottingham has had the four-digit area code 0115, followed by seven-digit local numbers.

The correct way to write a number beginning '01159' is (0115) 9xx xxxx, as this clearly distinguishes the optional 0115 area code from the seven digit local phone number. (Why this matters...)

Have things changed?

During the year 1995, Nottingham's area code changed from 0602 to 0115, while its old six-digit local phone numbers were prefixed with '9' to make them seven digits long.

For example, (0602) 234567 became (0115) 923 4567.

The new system gives Nottingham nearly 8 million numbers: (0115) 2000000 to (0115) 9989999. Prior to the change, fewer than 800,000 were available: (0602) 200000 to (0602) 998999.
