A note on the files

For each code, two definitions of the area covered are given:

Ofcom definition
The current official names for each area code as defined by telecoms regulator Ofcom, following industry consultation back in 2003. There are some anomalies, which are noted in the download files.

Historic BT definition
Traditional 'charging areas', as used by BT and their predecessors until 2003. The same name may be associated with more than one area code, reflecting how codes were grouped together for billing purposes.
