01179 Numbers

In the UK, an 01179 number is a normal landline phone number within the Bristol (0117) area code.

Any UK number beginning with 0117 is a Bristol number. The '0117' area code at the beginning is optional if you're dialling from one Bristol 0117 landline phone to another.

0117 or 01179?

There is no 01179 area code. Since the year 1995, Bristol has had the four-digit area code 0117, followed by seven-digit local numbers.

The correct way to write a number beginning '01179' is (0117) 9xx xxxx, as this clearly distinguishes the optional 0117 area code from the seven digit local phone number. (Why this matters...)

Have things changed?

During the year 1995, Bristol's area code changed from 0272 to 0117, while its old six-digit local phone numbers were prefixed with '9' to make them seven digits long.

For example, (0272) 222000 became (0117) 922 2000.

The new system gives Bristol nearly 8 million numbers: (0117) 2000000 to (0117) 9989999. Prior to the change, fewer than 800,000 were available: (0272) 200000 to (0272) 998999.
